Young Farmers from far and wide met at Park House Farm, Heversham to compete in the Westmorland County Agricultural Society’s annual YFC Stock Judging event.
A record turnout of almost 70 competitors from clubs throughout Cumbria, along with members from neighbouring Yorkshire and Lancashire, ensured competition was particularly keen, with just a few marks separating the top placings in each section.
The competition included judging prime lambs, dairy and beef cattle as well as completing a veterinary questionnaire with all competitors assessing the livestock against a master judge’s placings before giving traditional reasons.
President John Park commented “It is fantastic to see so many youngsters taking part in traditional stockjudging competitions, and with such high standards we can be sure of competent livestock farmers in the future.”
The overall title was taken for the second successive time by Pennine YFC member James Hayllar, closely followed by Mark Curr of the same club.
A delighted Emma Blaylock, a junior member of Longtown, was awarded the trophy for the female gaining highest points throughout the competition. “This is incredible” said Emma “I can’t believe I have scored more points than any of the senior girls.”
Other prizes were presented by Mr Park for the best individual Senior and Junior Stockman, along with the best club team (2 seniors and 2 juniors). Each complete team’s attendance was also rewarded with a cheque.
Chairman, Jonathan Mason, expressed thanks to the Capstick family for hosting the event and also to the judges, stewards and helpers for their support.
